Reception & Year 1 - Mumbai

Miss Herbert is the class teacher for Mumbai Class. The other adults in the class are Miss Fraser, Mrs. Range, Mrs. Hays, Mr. Dessena and Mrs. Miller.


Our topic for this term is "Fire and Ice". Please see Curriculum grid with details of the learning for each area of the curriculum.

  •  PE is  on Monday and Wednesday afternoons
  • Library books will be changed on Friday afternoons.
  • Year 1 spelling tests will be on a Friday.

Reading books

All children have a Yellow Reading Diary which should be kept in their book bags at all times. Please feel free to write any comments about your child's reading in the diary. Miss Herbert will have a guided reading session with each of the Year 1 children during the week and record a comment in their books. Any additional adults will write in the book and a brief comment.


Year 1 Maths Target Cards - support games
I have attached a link for a Maths skills website that will support your child in reaching their Maths Target. This website can be used alongside the Maths Target ideas in your child's homework wallet.
All of the activities on this website will enable your child to practise their counting skills and develop good mental maths skills.
Number bonds work
All Year 1 children have to know their number bonds to 10 and 20 and their corresponding subtraction facts by the end of the year.  Below you will find website links which will give you ideas on how to support your child in learning their number bonds.  The ICT game reinforces your child's recognition of which numbers go together to make 10.  Number bonds will form the basis for our class mental maths work over the next half term and the children will gradually pick up these facts the more we practice. The worksheets in their target card pack are for support if needed but are not a requirement. If you click on the  titles below you will be taken to the websites.

Year 1
We have started the history part of our topic, introducing the children to the Great Fire of London.
Children will be using an interactive website about the Great Fire of London to develop  their understanding.  Below is a link to the website we are using. Click on the words to access the website.
The children have made a great start to their school lives. They have enjoyed sharing about their families and we have begun to explore how amazingly different and special we all are. The photos below will give you a little insight into our mornings and what we have been learning.
Week Beginning 19th September 2016
This week we will be learning about Seasonal changes and beginning ongoing work on our weather and it's changes. Below you will find links to a children's weather forecast website that will help your child learn about the weather but also the different parts of the U.K.  You will also find another link to a website that tells you the name of different cloud formations. Week Beginning 25th September 2016
Reception Phonics
This week the children will bring home a worded reading book and a wordless reading books for you to share with your child. Please could you continue to make comments in your child's reading diary when you read with them as this is really useful for us.
We are beginning teaching our phonics program with the children this week. During the year we follow "Letters and Sounds" and use resources from "Jolly Phonics" to  support our learning. Phonics is taught in phases, from phase 1 - 6. Currently we are revision Phase 1 which the children often begin in Nursery and are teaching sounds from Phase 2.  If you click on the blue writing below you will be taken to different resources and websites that will support your child. The ICT games are particularly fun at helping your child apply their newly gained knowledge of sounds.
Year 1 Phonics
Most children are working at Phase 3 in our phonics program. You will find resources and games to support your child's learning in this phase on websites below. Each phase has new sounds to learn and blend and tricky words that should be learnt by sight. I have also included a glossary of terms we use when talking about sounds which may give further clarification for parents when supporting your child's learning.
Year 1 Maths work
We have been working on understanding teen numbers and how they are made with tens and ones. As part of that learning we are applying our knowledge to making amounts of money to 20p using 10ps and 1ps.  Below you will find links which can support your child's learning in these areas.
Week Beginning 10th October 2016
Reception Tricky words and handwriting
All children now have tricky words on trucks to practise at home. These words are to be learnt by the "look and say" method of learning and should not be broken down into sounds.
During the week we will be sending how handwriting sheets for the current sounds that we are working on. These are voluntary sheets but if any child completes them and returns them to school I will give a merit for their efforts. In Reception we learn non cursive letters.
A list of words to practise blending will also be sent home in the children's reading diary. These are words made using our current new letters sounds and can be broken up and blended to be read.
How to help Reception children with their reading books
  • Can they find letters that they know?
  • Can they talk about the pictures?
  • use any teacher/parent notes to discuss the book with your child.
  • Read the story to the child, with the child point to the words.
Year 1 - handwriting
In Year 1 we are beginning teaching the children cursive letters which are very similar but begin with a lead-in which starts on the line. Instructions sheets in the children's book bags will help the children practise these at home. If the children have large chalk and practise on the pavement it often helps with their learning the correct movement. When practising please encourage children just to get the correct letter shape and not join yet as this is further skill that is taught in Year 2.
Measure - we have been looking at tall and short in Year  R and measuring in cm in Year 1. Below is a link to useful websites.
Also, the children have been naming and sorting 2D shapes. See the link below for a game helping children talk about how to sort 2D shapes.
Reception Letters and Sounds Song
Below you will find a song that helps the children learn the letter names and their associated sounds. Beware! It's very catchy and will stay in your head all day. Please note that the song says "Zee" instead of "Z" for the letter name but the children are good at saying the correct letter name.
Week Beginning 17th October 2016
Year 1 - Science - Materials and their properties
This week we are finishing off our learning about materials and their properties. We will use what we have learnt to inform our own making projects.
Reception - Understanding of the world
We are focusing on learning about floating and sinking and making observations about similarities and differences between objects. Which objects float? Which sink? We will then make a fire boat out of our own materials which we hope will float. Below you will find a link to a BBC website that introduces floating and sinking.
Welcome Back to the 2nd half of the Autumn Term
Ice -
We are shifting our learning focus this half term to the second part of our Fire and Ice Topic.
This week 's learning -
  • we are using cold colours to paint Arctic pictures, using colour mixing skills to make a variety of cold colours
  • identifying animals that live in cold places
  • Year 1 will pinpoint Antarctica and other cold areas of the world and begin to name the 7 continents of the world.

Below you will links to some useful topic websites.   The websites have some useful pictures which will promote discussion but the content is hard for the children to read independently. The bottom two website are more interactive, whereas the first two websites are good for discussion of photos.

Year 1 phonics

I have given the children some cards on key rings to help them practice blending different words. The children can use these to practise segmenting and blending. They can use the word key rings to help them write the words from memory.

Reception phonics

The children have been given sounds cards to practise reading and writing. They have also been given words on key rings which are to be blended and read using phonic strategies.

Tricky Truck words - these truck words are to still be learnt by the "look and say" method as it's a more helpful method for these challenging words.

Please can you keep the key rings in your child's reading wallet so that adults at school always have it to hand.


I will be giving both Year R and 1 age appropriate handwriting sheets in the next week or so. This is an optional activity but children will receive merits for handing in any completed handwriting booklets. These can be done over the next half term.

Reading words and sentences
Below you will find a link to a website that helps your child with their reading. There are various levels which help your child break up words and read longer sentences.  This is suitable for both Reception and Year 1.
Year 1 Maths Target games/support
The children will be working on the following Maths targets in school -
  • To read, write and record numbers in numerals and words
  • To count in 2s, 5s and 10s ( to be able to recognise numbers in these sequences)
  • To recognise the differences between ty and teen numbers

Year 1 Maths - quarter, half and whole turns
This week we are focussing on rotation of shapes and objects. We are applying our knowledge through the use of programmable toys called Beebots. Please note that the activity link below which involves turn around a circle has challenging questions but is useful for the children to use to show a whole turn, half turn and quarter turn. I am not expecting the children to be able to answer all the questions but they should benefit from seeing whole, half and quarter turns on the circle.
We will also be looking at direction and compass points for navigation.

Reception Reading Games
We have been working on new tricky words which need to be learned by sight. We are continuing to revise phase 2 phonemes as well as introducing more diagraphs (2 letter sounds) in Phase 3.  Below is a link to a program that will support your child's learning in these areas.
Shipwrecks and Mermaids
We are looking at stories which are set on or under the sea.  We will be looking at marine life and using information books to find out facts about different sea animals.
Our science work is based around grouping and sorting animals. An interactive game link below will help the children to think of different ways to classify animals.

Number line Adding - Year 1
We are learning how to use a numberline to add on. We are also revising our number bonds to 20. Please find below a link to an ICT game which will support your child's learning. We used this game to practise writing addition number sentences. 
Place Value activities
We will be looking at how many tens and ones there are in different numbers. Below you will find a game that will support your child's learning.
Week Beginning 9th January 2017
Year 1 Spelling ideas - below you will find some links to  websites to help improve spellings in a fun way. I will be sending home a sheet on different ways to help your child learn their spellings.
Week Beginning 16.1.2017
We will be looking at weight this week, talking about heavier and lighter. We will be developing our understanding of number using weighing scales to show how different combination of numbers are equal to each other. Please find ICT games below that will help with both Reception and Year 1's understanding of weight and number.
Year 1 Maths Targets
We are working on new Maths targets connected with fractions. Below is a link to help with understanding of fractions. The children are just beginning their work on fractions which will focus on halves and quarters. The games are tricky and include other fractions but can help the children understand equal parts etc. The flag game is the best game to start with and the following two games are much more challenging and should be used when your child is more secure with what a fraction is. Being able to use the language of "equal parts"  is important for your child.
French EYFS/Year 1
Every Tuesday afternoon the children learn to read and speak French. Much of what they learn is done using songs and actions. Below are the words to a French Children's song that are used in class. Happy singing!
Year 1 Geography - Features of the Seaside
Children in KS1 learn to use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to:

key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea, ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather

key human features, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shop

Year 1 Maths
This week (22.1.2017)  we are looking at finding the difference between 2 numbers using different methods. We will begin with comparing two towers of cubes and seeing how many more/less cubes are used. Below is a link to a basic teaching tool which compares two sets of beadstrings. The children will be familiar with it as I will have used it in school. If you press the "i" button it will explain how to use it.
Next week (30.1.2017) we will be looking at coin recognition and solving addition and subtraction problems involving money. The link below will reinforce your child's money skills.
